In 2004 I got a virus on my Windows XP computer. I was furious. I was also fed up with Microsoft. So, I bought a Mac. I bought Apple’s new iMac G5 computer. I was thrilled to finally have a Mac. I wanted a Mac since the release of the 1984 Macintosh computer, but they were always out of my price range. But come 2004, I was financially able and was more willing then ever to get a Mac.
That Mac was awesome for it’s time. I remember how buttery-smooth the animations were on that OS. Unlike my experience with Windows computers, it never stuttered throughout its operation. I stuck with Macs until 2015. When they made the transition to Intel chips, that buttery- smooth animation was lost. When I read about Apple returning to the RISC processor model with their M1 chips, I was excited. I bet those things are going to be buttery-smooth like they were before the switch to Intel. It’s about time they are making their own chips again. Although I don’t have any plans to move back to a Mac - I’m full on into Linux now - I am glad they are making their own chips now.
In 2015 I sold my last Mac, my MacBook Pro 15” laptop. From 2004 to 2015 I went through far too many Mac computers. They did not last long enough, unlike their computers from the past (before 2004). So, I had enough. My falling-apart MacBook Pro went up for sell on Ebay and that was it. I bought parts to make my own PC again like I had done prior to my Mac days and built my Linux box which is still running to this day - I have only added hard drives to manage all my growing data with the many things I am doing on Linux! *NONE* of my Macs lasted 6 years. Not one. I am on year 8 with my current motherboard, CPU and RAM. Now, I know there are people out there that have used their same Mac for more than 6 years, but maybe I just use mine more than others.
My Linux desktop has been running constantly since 2015 (4th gen i7, 4GHz, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD main drive (27TB total with connected drives). I use it for work (running Windows 10 in a VM because, corporate America, right?) and I use it as our media center as well as for play. How much was it? $600. Yeah, so I’m going to have a hard time paying out so much to get a Mac again so I don’t see that happening, plus I don’t like the lack of customizability in the Mac OS. So . . . I’m sticking with Linux but I do appreciate my years with a Mac. Good experience.
And now? I have Linux running as my main OS on two laptops as well. The laptop I am on now I purchased in 2017 and I’m running Windows XP in a VM to build this site because I like using NetObjects Fusion. Running Windows in a VM is the best way to run it, unless you’re into heavy gaming.
But, back to Mac OS X. My son and I consider Mac OS X Snow Leopard the last great release of OS X. The OS is now called macOS and it’s just not as great as we remember Snow Leopard being.
