DOS

IBM PC XTThough I used an Apple IIe at school, and had one at home, I ended up working for a small company on an IBM XT computer. This would later be the foundation for my travels into the world of MS DOS! (~1987-1994)

It was at that company that I used Word for DOS for transcribing recordings as well as some dBase for managing lists. I believe it was dBase III at that time. This was around 1986 - 1987.

Commander KeenOne of my favorite games on DOS is Commander Keen by Apogee (the whole series). I just wish I had purchased the whole series when I could have and that I held onto them. You can get some of them via Steam today, but others only in shareware/incomplete forms. But, that’s okay. I’m not one to spend hours on a game. I usually play for 10-15 minutes and then come back some other day for another dose.

Apogee SoftwareThe good news is that it appears Apogee is BACK! We may see a re-mastered version of Commander Keen coming to our PCs again, possibly this year. I’m excited! It will be fun to see what they do with it, although I hope they keep it true to the form it was originally given or at least offer an updated graphics version but with the option to switch to the classic DOS graphics.

Keen BirdApogee was a popular game creator company in the days of DOS. I remember downloading many of their shareware titles from BBS sites around town. They made other titles that I enjoyed like Monster Bash, Cosmo’s Cosmic Adventure, Biomenace and Raptor.
